Why You Shouldn’t Use GoDaddy for Microsoft 365 Email (Or Any Other Microsoft Service)
If your business email runs through GoDaddy Microsoft 365, there’s a good chance you’re paying for a Microsoft product that GoDaddy — not you, and not Microsoft — actually controls. It’s one of the most common support calls we get from Perth businesses: outgoing mail stuck in the outbox, login loops that never resolve, or a Global Admin who suddenly can’t do anything a Global Admin is supposed to do.
None of that is a coincidence. It’s how GoDaddy’s Microsoft 365 reselling model is built.
GoDaddy Doesn’t Sell You a Microsoft 365 Account — It Sells You a Federated One
When you buy “Microsoft 365 from GoDaddy,” you’re not getting a standard Microsoft tenant. You’re getting a tenant where GoDaddy sits between you and Microsoft as the partner of record, using a setup called federation.
In plain English: GoDaddy owns the relationship with Microsoft on your behalf. Your logins, your billing, and a chunk of your admin settings get routed through GoDaddy’s systems before they ever reach Microsoft’s. That’s what makes password resets loop, sign-in pages redirect to GoDaddy instead of Microsoft, and support tickets bounce between two companies who each blame the other.
The Real Limitations of a GoDaddy Federated Account
These aren’t hypothetical — they’re documented and widely reported by IT professionals and by GoDaddy itself:
You don’t get a real Global Admin. GoDaddy retains elevated “partner” access to your tenant. Your admin account has a reduced set of permissions compared to a normal Microsoft 365 Global Admin — certain security, compliance, and identity settings simply aren’t yours to change.
No access to advanced Microsoft tools. Features like Microsoft Entra ID Premium, Microsoft Purview compliance tools, Defender configurations, and Intune device management are restricted or unavailable while your tenant is federated to GoDaddy.
Hard caps on mailbox and sending limits. GoDaddy-managed Microsoft 365 plans impose their own ceilings — message size limits, daily sending caps, alias limits, and mailbox item counts — separate from what Microsoft itself allows.
Licensing is tied to GoDaddy’s billing, not Microsoft’s. If a subscription lapses or isn’t renewed through GoDaddy specifically, licences can be suspended within days, even though the “Microsoft 365” branding makes people assume Microsoft is handling it.
You can’t cleanly add other Microsoft services. Because GoDaddy controls the tenant relationship, layering on services like Teams Phone, SharePoint at scale, or enterprise security add-ons is far more limited — or requires “defederating” first.
Getting out is a project, not a click. Moving off GoDaddy’s federation (called defederation) means removing GoDaddy’s partner access, resetting admin credentials, updating DNS/MX records, and often cleaning up GoDaddy-specific layers like Advanced Email Security. It’s very doable, but it’s not something you want to attempt without IT support mid-outage.
The Support Problem
Search “GoDaddy Microsoft 365 problems” and you’ll find years of reports of the same handful of issues: mail stuck in outboxes, endless sign-in loops, DNS/Autodiscover misconfigurations, and support tickets that ping-pong between GoDaddy’s helpdesk and Microsoft’s, with neither side owning the fix. That’s the practical cost of federation — when something breaks, you’re troubleshooting two vendors instead of one.

Buy Microsoft 365 directly from Microsoft, or through a genuine Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) — a partner who provisions your tenant without a federation layer sitting on top of it. You get full Global Admin control, direct access to Microsoft’s security and compliance stack, and one point of accountability when something goes wrong.
